What It Means to Follow Your Thread

December 4, 2025
 /

I talk a lot about following your thread. It is something I have whispered to my children their entire lives. It is something I repeat to myself when I forget who I am and who God made me to be. And now I find myself saying it again as my daughter steps into this new world called college. She is standing at the edge of her own story, and I want her to know what it took me years to understand.

Your thread is the path God stitches into your heart long before you ever recognize it. It is quiet at first. A feeling. A nudge. A tug you can never quite explain to anyone else. It is your calling. Your purpose. Your holy assignment that does not always make sense to the people around you. Because let me tell you, the world has opinions. So many opinions.

Anyone can write books.

You will never make a living with that.

Why not get a real job.

I heard all of it. Sometimes I still do. And every single time, I feel that familiar panic creeping in. That whisper that tries to talk me out of the very thing God has asked me to do. The enemy does not need a megaphone when he can use doubt to do the job.

But here is what I know now.
Your thread is not up for public vote. God puts something inside you, and even when it feels impossible, even when you feel unqualified, even when the people you love look at you like you have grown a second head, that thread stays. It stays because it is His. Not yours. Not theirs. His. And if God stitches something into you, it is not coming out. Not with fear. Not with criticism. Not with a thousand well-meaning voices trying to keep you safe by keeping you small.

So this is what I tell my daughter.
This is what I tell myself.
This is what I am telling you right now.
Follow your thread.
Follow it when people doubt you.

Follow it when you doubt yourself.

Follow it when the path makes no sense and the numbers do not add up and the practical people in your life give you That Look.
Follow it when your knees shake and your voice trembles and you wonder if you misunderstood the assignment.
Follow it anyway.

Because the thread God gives you is the one that leads you home. It is the one that ties your purpose to His plan. It is the one that turns dreams into testimonies. It is the one that reminds your children to listen to His voice above every other noise in this world. And that is what I want for her as she begins this new chapter. Not a perfect life. Not a safe one. Not a predictable one.

A faithful one. A life where she trusts that holy tug in her heart. A life where she follows the thread God gave her, even when the world says she should choose something easier or louder or more profitable. A life where she knows that every good story begins with a woman who listens to God, takes a breath, and steps forward anyway.

With love, faith, and one steady stitch at a time,
Lynn
